Description
DSQC658: Product Overview
The DSQC658 is a digital input/output module designed for ABB’s IRC5 robot controller system. This compact module serves as an interface between the robot controller and external equipment in an automated work cell. Installed in the robot controller’s main computer rack, its primary function is to convert control signals from the robot’s application program into switched 24V DC outputs that operate devices such as solenoid valves, relays, indicators, and other peripheral equipment, while simultaneously monitoring input signals from sensors, limit switches, and safety devices. The module enables the robot to interact with tooling, grippers, and other automation components synchronized with the robot’s motion.
The module operates under the control of the main robot computer, executing I/O commands based on the robot program logic. It provides electrical isolation between the robot controller’s internal electronics and the external field devices, protecting the sensitive control system from electrical noise and voltage spikes that can occur in industrial environments. The design focuses on reliability and durability for continuous operation in manufacturing applications.

Core Features & Customer Value
The module’s 16 configurable I/O channels provide flexibility for work cell design, allowing control of peripheral devices from a single module. Each channel is individually protected, preventing a fault on one I/O from affecting the others. This design ensures that a failure in one part of the system doesn’t disable the entire work cell, maintaining production availability. The sourcing output configuration is compatible with most industrial sensors and actuators, simplifying integration with existing equipment.
The built-in diagnostic capabilities, including status LEDs for each channel, simplify troubleshooting and maintenance. Technicians can quickly identify which I/O are active without requiring additional test equipment. The module’s robust design ensures reliable operation in industrial environments with electrical noise and vibration. The removable terminal block facilitates easy wiring and module replacement, reducing maintenance downtime.
In material handling applications, the DSQC658 controls gripper solenoids, conveyor start/stop signals, and part presence indicators. The robot program coordinates the I/O signals with motion commands to ensure precise timing for pick-and-place operations.
In welding applications, the module controls weld gun open/close signals, weld timer triggers, and smoke extraction systems. The I/O are synchronized with the robot’s path to ensure proper sequencing of the welding process.
